Praying through grief with lullabies

Trigger warning: this post is about grief and the loss of children and parents.

I often stay with my daughter after “lights out” and sing her songs and scratch her back as she begins to wind down to sleep. It’s an exceedingly tender time of day. We’re all spent, and we are still. I find myself turning toward the Holy, taking stock of my emotions of the day and what’s going on in my life and the lives of my loved ones.

  1. Thank you for this post. I have many wonderful memories of singing and rocking my girls to sleep (when they were younger) to lullaby/prayer music and then rocking them before putting them to bed until they were 8 or 9. We had a few favorite CDs that I could put on and let the music pray for/with me as we rested before their bedtime. It never mattered how rough the day was, that “rocking time” as we called it, was magical. The girls are now 13 and 10 but we still sometimes snuggle together in bed at night or in the morning and every once in a while (like today) I remember to play some music that we can listen/sing to as a sweet time for prayer, reflection, and just being together. Thank you for the reminder to keep doing this!
